“Labor & Leisure” Day at Billings Farm & Museum
Woodstock, Vermont
Billings Farm & Museum, celebrating its 25th Anniversary Year, will host Labor
& Leisure Day on Monday, September 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Lend a
hand sawing wood with a crosscut saw, building a rail fence, working in the
heirloom garden, and enjoy 19th century games. Experience the latest in 19th
century laundry techniques and learn how potato starch is made. There’s even
ice cream making with samples for all - after the cranking is done. Horse-drawn
wagon rides will be offered from 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Admission to Labor &
Leisure Day includes all programs and activities, plus an added bonus - the 22nd
Annual Quilt Exhibition featuring an exquisite selection of contemporary

Notes from the Heart...
It is hard to say goodbye to summer. I'm feeling a bit sad as I feel the nights
getting crisper, see the days getting shorter, and watch the leaves beginning their
autumn journey. Susan Nye, of Pleasant Lake, NH, in this week's feature, Say
Goodbye to Summer, urges us to squeeze in as much as we can this Labor Day
weekend to savor the last few weeks of summer before Fall closes in here in
Northern New England. ~ M.

I have been doing some research on the Internet about the daggone black flies. I
noticed on your site that several birds are fond of black flies as a meal or snack.
Are you aware of whether bats find black flies tasty as well? (Pete P. from
Queensbury, NY).
Hi Pete,
Thanks for your question! According to NHPR, bats DO eat black flies:
" Finally, black flies are a good source of food for other wildlife - bats,
dragonflies, flycatchers and swallows are a few of the critters that eat black flies -
so try to encourage these animals to live in your backyard, and then you can
celebrate as the black flies become dinner themselves!" See page at:

Feature: Say Goodbye to Summer
For some unknown reason it’s always a shock when Labor Day arrives. Sure, we
know it’s coming but every year we are surprised by how quickly it gets here.
Recipe: Grilled Corn on the Cob
When we are grilling over charcoal, I often grill our fresh corn rather than
steaming it. On a hot day, it doesn’t make sense to heat a pot on the stove when
we have a fire outside, and truly sweet fresh corn barely needs cooking, making
it ideal for a quick roast over the hot coals.
From our Archives: Acadian Heritage, Preserved (Maine)
The Acadian culture is preserved and shared at Acadian Village in Van Buren,
Maine through the restoration or replica construction of buildings, furniture and
articles of daily life. The village opened in 1976 for the bicentennial and is a
Historic National Landmark. The Living Heritage Society of Van Buren built the
village on donated land and local people are committed to maintaining the
village.
