| ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Notes from my back porch... My husband left for Alaska this morning for a conference on global warming (in his capacity as a Keene city councilor). There, along with other city officials from around the country and the world, he will take a tour of some of the receding glaciers. As much as I would have loved to have gone, I don't know if I could bear the sadness of seeing that. I often think about our own little corner of the world in New England and what global warming might mean to our beautiful autumns, our glorious snow-filled winters, our spring-time maple syrup. Just the other day I read that the average yearly temperature in New England has risen by 4 degrees. Needless to say, I am looking at my mini-van with a rather jaded eye these days. In the meantime, I'm thinking about buying some carbon credits (www.certifiedcleancar.com, www.terrapass.com, or www.carbonfund.org for information on how this works). That is, until I buy a totally solar-powered car :) Ford, GM...how about it? Our Stories This Week: When it comes to leaf-peeping, don’t be fooled. There is more than one way to peep a leaf. Hail to the “peep” this fall with a visit to Mt. Washington Valley, located in the heart of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Offering not only spectacular foliage but a wide variety of ways to enjoy the harvest hues of Mother Nature’s artistry, there’s plenty of great ways to enjoy Mt. Washington Valley’s fall foliage throughout this autumn. But remember, be sure to book your reservation soon or forever hold your peep. The early bird gets the best rooms! In Season Recipe: Eggplant with Goat Cheese & Pesto By Charlie Burke We picked the last or our thin purple eggplant this week, and I am determined to use them all over the next week or so. New Hampshire Knows Halloween In New Hampshire, Halloween is for everyone. What else would you expect of the state that just made the pumpkin its official state fruit? Fourth graders from the Keene area took their roots (vines?) to heart when they applied their civics lessons to convincing the State Legislature that the pumpkin should be honored. After all, Keene holds the Guinness World Record for displaying the most lighted jack o'lanterns in one place at one time.
